A Night at the Pantheon

The Pantheon was a Roman temple dedicated to all gods. The original temple was built in 27 B.C. by Augustus' son-in-law, Marcus Agrippa. But after a couple of fires, the structure we saw today was completely rebuilt by the emperor Hadrian around 120 A.D. It was the most influential building in art history. Its dome was the model for the cathedral dome in Florence and launched the Renaissance. It was also the model for St. Peter's domed ceiling, designed by Michelangelo and served as the inspiration for the capitol dome in Washington, D.C. The Renaissance artist Raphael is buried inside and also houses the tombs of modern Italy's first two kings. One of the king's wives is buried here. Her name was Margherita for which the classic pizza Margherita is named after....yummy mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil!
